It’s no secret the economy is in the worst shape ever!!! People are losing their jobs; Arizona unemployment is at its highest rate ever, many families are giving up their homes and making major modifications to their lifestyles just to stay alive.  During these rough times, it is imperative that you obtain/keep a job.  Your first start is to have an effective resume that gets results!

Over the course of three years, we have seen the definition of a resume evolve.  Originally, a resume was noted as a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experiences.  Now a resume is much much more.  Today a resume is a way for you to paint (in words) a full picture of who you are, what you can bring to a company, and where your true expertise and experiences lie.

Staff from Résumés To Go® knows firsthand what it takes to create an effective resume that gets noticed. As recent as June 2010, staff met with employers in various fields, from health care services, IT companies, small business owners, local college representatives - to meetings with other working business professionals in all fields. This was to understand what hiring managers are looking for when it comes to selecting resumes of potential candidates. From the meetings, there were a lot of reoccurring messages, for example1:

o   Most resumes submitted are too general. Individuals provide an informational “dump”, for a lack of better words, to articulate what they did in past/current positions with no tie-in to the job they are applying for now.

o   “One size does not fit all” - Don’t assume the resume you submitted to apply for your current or past job is the one you should use for all jobs. Resumes should be written, re-written, and written again to ensure you communicate the skills you have are relevant to the position you are applying for or seeking.

Here’s a secret – sometimes Human Resource Departments or those who are tasked to create job descriptions, do it based on the little information they are given. They sometimes do not have a full understanding of the position or the competencies really needed to guarantee a good candidate for a position. For that reason, key words and phrases should be included in your cover letter and resume that will give the reviewer a clear and concise understanding of the work you have done to support the position they have available.
